ENH 325 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Steam Heat, Heat Pump, Baseboard
Document Summary
Only covering the inspecting a house material. Furnace system (all have burners, all based on burning something-boil oil and gas) Earlier were cast iron (really heavy but last 3 times as long as), steel, copper. When you heat water, it expands, if confined then problem. Expansion system: when water heats up, it has somewhere to go. You can have a radiator in the basement. Both of the boilers have pip coming in that says make-up water supply. Must be able to add water to these systems. Direct connection to the potable water supply. Once in the system, no longer considered potable water. A potable system and a non-potable system. Any home that has a hot water heating system, has a cross connection. The non-potable water in this system goes back up. Gases go up and out the chimney and hot water is circulated thru the radiators. The older radiators that look like big accordions are made of cast iron.
