The water distributions pipes were originally made from lead, which is where the name comes from. There is no safe threshold for lead exposure. Became a problem while smelting during industrial revolution. Leaded gasoline and paint - lead in the home environment. In the 1970s to control lead levels lead gasoline was phased out, it is now banned. At the same time phasing out lead paint. Can liberate a lot of lead dust into the air. Lead toys and jewelry come up the most for sources of lead in children. Back ow is due to back siphonage or back pressure. Back siphonage is the back ow of used contaminated or polluted water from a plumbing xture from a negative pressure on the supply pipe. Back siphonage is more common- it is easy to create. Positive pressure on the polluted side to the water supply. The best defence against back ow is not to have cross connection.
