ENH 617 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Demographic Transition, Anthropocene, Millennium Development Goals
Document Summary
Ecology- interaction between living things and their environment. Applied ecology- emphasizes influence/role of human systems in these interactions. Defining environment and resources: everything around us- atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere, and. Biosphere: resource- some aspect of the environment used by humans, resources are more specific and include forests, wildlife, oceans, rivers, lakes, minerals, and petroleum, anthropocentric view- value is defined relative to human interests, wants, and needs. Instrumental value: ecocentric or biocentric view- defined as an aspect of the environment that is valued simply because of its existence intrinsic value. The experimental lakes area: north western on, 58 small lakes, by manipulating these small lakes, scientists are able to examine how all aspects of the ecosystem from the atmosphere to fish populations respond. Wicked problems: problems that come up when looking at environment, ecology etc, tricky to balance the needs of many stakeholders, stakeholders- those who are involved in or affected by a course of action/policy/plan.
