Document Summary
Social equity and environmental justice february 8, 2017. A question of equity: power relationships influence decision making. When does inequality become unfair from environment perspective/ There is a growing body of literature demonstrating an increase in inequality: affluent vs poor, majority vs minority, proximity to waste sites, exposure to air pollution, incidences of lead poisoning. It"s the right of every citizen to adequate protection from environmental hazards. Everyone should have the right too: clean and healthy environment, equal protection from negative environmental impacts, equal compensation for exposure to negative environmental impacts, equal access to high quality environmental resources. 2014 flint city thought a way to reduce costs they could get drinking water from flint. Insufficient water treatment lead to 100,000 residents were potentially exposed to high levels of lead in the drinking water. Situation has been rectified but must used bottled of filtered water for drinking and bathing until all lead pipes removed.
