Storm water and sewage february 15, 2017. Sediment algae, small material, soil, sandy: caused by construction in cities. Nutrients and pesticides fertilizer run off: golf courses contribute to this. Microbial pathogens dog poo: when not cleaned, it runs off into streams. Road salt: kills organisms in streams. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products: estrogen / anti biotics. Heat hot water: affects aquatic life. Stream flow at point determined by runoff from upslope contributing area and ground water inputs. Surface topography often determines where catchment or watershed boundaries lie. Infiltration capacity - lands ability to absorb water run off: run down hill into some sort of stream. If its an impervious surface (tarmac or concrete) there over land flow because the surfaces cant absorb the water and run off it quick(cities) Pervious surface (like soil) will soak some of the flow in. Hydrograph a plot of stream flow over time. Hyetograph a plot of rainfall over time.
