Sometimes designers will create knockoffs or ruboffs: selecting fabrics and garment finishes. One of the early decisions is selecting fabrics. When selecting fabrics, you must be mindful of: face and back of fabric, lengthwise symmetry, crosswise symmetry, scale of the design, fabric width. For first patterns must keep in mind the shapes of the pattern pieces unusual shapes = inefficient markers. Patterns must be modified to yield better fabric utilization.
