FSN 101 Lecture 9: WEEK 9 – Lecture
Document Summary
Colour is determined by what the silk worm eats. Fiber is in triangular in shape, rounded corners reflecting light like a prism. Surrounds silk when extruded into a cocoon by caterpillar. Several filaments gather together and wound on a reel to make one yarn. Filament broke or the moth matured and emerged from the cocoon. Creates irregular yarn that is slub, thick and thin. Caterpillar allowed to complete its life cycle in the cocoon. Continous silk fibre is broken and spun like other staple fibres. Fabric is not as strong as filament fibre materials. Fibre is triangular with slighty rounded corners (+) reflect light, wonder lustre. Highly absorbent (+) comfortable to wear (+) affinity to dye (+) easily absorbs water and detergent to release stains. Good elasticity & moderate resilience (+) creases will hang out (-) does not recover from wrinkling as well as wool (+) comfortable next to skin.
