Document Summary

Any fibre derived from a manufactured process. From substance that was not from a natural fibre. Initially made for people who could not afford the real thing. First to used manufactured fibres in garments in ready-to-wear. End uses: (pg 124 (new) pg 114 (old)) Distinguish their fibre from others in class. Large molecule made by the connecting of smaller molecules together. Used to manufacture nylon, olefin, polyester and saran. Solid polymer chips are melted in a hopper. When molten polymer emerges, cool air passes to harden fibre. Currently can produce 10 000 m a minute. Used to manufacture acetate, acrylic, modacrylic, and spandex. Polymer is dissolved into solvent, creating liquid. Can be reclaimed after each manufacturing process. Liquid is extruded into circulating hot gas. If controlled, shape will be more uniform. Used to manufacture rayon, (some) acrylics, lyocell and (some) spandex. Solution is extruded through the holes, to the bottom. Spaced so fibres don"t touch each other.
