The venus of willendorf (25000-21000bc) is a bit of a misnomer, in that it predates the concept of venus, which was a god associated with the greeks. Found near austria; fits in the palm of the hand, meant to be portable. Because most tribes were nomadic, they were mobile, requiring their totems to be so as well. Once you get past her emphasized features, you realize that she has no face or personality. Her individuality isn"t important, it is a symbol.
