1908: suffragettes (used to be called votes of women) Purple, white and green = colour scheme of the british suffragette movement: designed by emiline pankhurst lawrence in prep for the women"s sunday (mass) - Introduced in weekly news for women: purple - royal colour, royal blood that runs in the veins of every suffragette, white - purity, green - hope and spring - uniform for suffragettes. Mass demonstrations and a unifying look so you could see how many people were involved. Special occasions : all white uniform: suffragettes were not considered very attractive, white = way to look feminine. Women were often jailed in bad conditions: forcibly fed as they were martyrs and took part in hunger strikes, they had an elaborate support system. Ritual visits (marching bands) and ceremonial breakfasts on their release. Within 5 years, they raised 3 million pounds (modern day equivalent) Merchandised their image in a successful and organized way.
