A great deal of diversity and variability exists with fatherhood in the 21st century. The dominant motif of the fatherhood in any given period has always coexisted along side other conceptions of fatherhood. Need to take a series of continuing pictures of fatherhood over time in order to understand its historical significance. Witnessed some radical shifts in the way fatherhood roles have been conceptualised over the last two centuries. Moral teacher paternalistic, patriarchal, power imbalances, strict/grounded dad. Sex role model based on traditional gender scripts, dad becomes role model for what it means to be a man according to heteronormative beliefs. New nurturing father contemporary father, who embraces the role of father or parents, engaged in childrearing, romantic image of men/dads. Recent investigations of fatherhood attempt to redefine and expand conceptualizations of father"s involvement in family life and child-rearing. Contemporary studies now capture the range of fatherhood activities that influence children"s lives.
