FNF 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Intellectual Disability
Document Summary
Poor families tend to develop fatalistic values and attitudes about their lot in life: Devalue education, career aspirations and the usual middle-class definitions of success. Live within a type of survival mentality. Poverty becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in which failure is inevitable and poverty is seen to cause my poverty. Impoverished felt like they were shunned from education. Within this position it is also argued that: Higher education is a waste of time not real work - little chance to succeed. Orientation is sharply contrasted with middle class orientations for success and career advancement. Old cultural definitions largely invented by middle-class social scientists. Largely exclusionary - divides the world into us and them . Old arguments assume that poor people share values and attitudes that render them incapable of competing in the dominate culture defined by middle-class sensibilities. Larger problems in the world separating the different classes.
