Hooper: modernist still shapes present, but people also want to democratize museums and develop thinking + learning in pomo. Transform, change environment produced in modernist institutions. City life = few genuine public spaces; museums have potential to be that space, e. g. europe pre-capitalist tons of public spaces. But we still have large scale narrative e. g. multiculturalism, american dream. Despite pomo distrust of institutions, still have huge myths and ideologies. Identity: self is multiple and open to change vs fixed and stable. Learning: linked to lifestyle vs acquisition of approved knowledge. Focuses on exhibition visit rather than the politics of the institution. Visit = drama, visitors have an active role. Meaning is negotiated, not single and given because. Scaffolding = develop an experience by providing some information but not all; scaffolding connections.
