Document Summary

Narratology is the study of narrative and narrative structure. It is concerned with the way stories affect perceptions. Narratives start myths, which are relevant for their applicability to society and culture. Myths have been part of human society since the genesis of speech. The first story is considered to be homer"s iliad, which was told originally by word of mouth. This is not uncommon, as prior to the dawn of civilization, stories were spread exclusively orally. Additionally, each person had their own experiences and relationships to nature and spirits. Shamans provided a bridge between spirituality and reality for the common people. They were the myth experts of their time. They both invented and performed early versions of rituals. Theatre, clay tablets and festivals became cultural practice. Egypt, 3100 bce - first records of scripted plays. Myth is now used for social control through religion. Greece, 500 bce - formulas are added to myths.
