Document Summary

Broadcast writing is di erent than writing print (prose) Telling a story is hard because listening to a story is hard. Broadcast writing isn"t permanent, as writing for print is permanent, solid, concrete. Writing for the ear: writing must be simple, clear and concise. People speak in contractions: i"m instead of i am, we"re instead of we are, etc. Can"t: may sound the same as the opposite meaning. The ear will blend sounds together: won"t and don"t are acceptable since the sounds are di erent enough. Contractions indicate informality but it"s okay to use the full word for emphasis. Example: it is the truth vs. it"s the truth, i am canadian vs. i"m canadian. The contract which i signed is missing vs. the contract i signed is missing. Be aware of what these words do: that introduces a restrictive (de ning) clause, which introduces a non restrictive (commenting) clause. Is that so: questions make writing more informal.
