Have to feel like we have some agency, some control over what happens in a story or what the outcome will be. Relatability and means the through technology to express this. There has always been a community and play aspect to stories. Storytelling itself began as an oral tradition. We told stories to each other in groups as warnings, as a means of explanation, entertainment, morality. Communities used stories to bring about events, to ward off disease, to comfort. The role of the story and storyteller is to prevent historical catastrophes from happening again. Prior to the novel, storytellers had an intimate relationship w/their audience and the purpose of the story was to share wisdom, to prevent historical catastrophes.
