Radio comes to cause a commercial war between three key players: lee de forest. Self promoter with a persona of bravado. Claimed (falsely) to be the father of radio . This was a tube that amplified radio signals of the human voice. This was standard until invention of the transistor. Figured out how the audion worked in 1912. Created regeneration (output used to strengthen signal with no additional energy) Enhanced device could transmit as well as receive. Lost a patent fight to de forest (it was the longest in us history) Vision of radio as a means of mass appliance in the home. Acted as a messenger after the titanic, relaying messages. Allegedly wrote a memo in 1916 forseeing the future of radio. This allows for fine tuning of radio to a specific frequency. Rca controls patents of the three biggest radio companies. Used as the audio system for tv. 1954, armstrong is in such dysphoria that he kills himself.
