Star power was discovered to be more valuable than high quality sets, due to rudimentary definition. Tv pacing is distinctly different than radio pacing. Show eventually cancelled because of fights between jwt and standard. Hosted by milton berle, a vaudeville performer. Start of camera theory, use of angles, timing. Berle has a show persona that is exaggerated. Subsequent influx of tv sales, which was also a partial result of the post war recession. Beatles introduced to american stardom via the show. Jackie mason flips the finger, almost gets his career ruined. In the early years, there was no canadian programming, so canadians with tvs just pointed antennas south. Broke through in the us in 1958. Cbc"s devotion to it may have stunted other cancon comedic growth. Don messer became a (very quiet) star. Nbc takes a gamble and gives him a half hour time slot. Many guests appear for free, as there is little advertising to be found.
