1979 = 11% annual drop in record sales. Leisure money divided among recordings, cable tv, vhs/beta video, video games: more formats for which you could purchase media, videogames were new nintendo and atari, also the time period of computers starting to be mainstream. Companies respond by promoting fewer musicians put all their resources into mega-platinum stars. Small number of multiplatinum artists pulled industry out of recession in mid-80s. Corporate consolidation of music industry: late 80s/early 90s: because of the smaller number of artists being promoted. 6 multinationals controlled 2/3 of global sales: dutch polygram (mercury, island, a&m, polydor , japanese sony corp. (columbia, japanese matsushita, british thorn (emi, virgin, german bertelsmann (rca, american time-warner (warner, atlantic) Have to start thinking about the microrhythms and the cuts of the film: sometimes people slightly shift it so they don"t line up because apparently that"s cheesy. 1st broadcast song = video killed the radio star by the buggles.
