Attributes of space: distance, direction, area: distance: spatial dimension of separate between two points/locations. Transferring the geometric properties of a sphere onto a flat map requires different projections for different attributes. You cannot, with a single projection, preserve all attributes: direction, area, and distance. The mercator project: straight lines are lines of constant compass bearing but they are not.
