GEO 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Oceanic Crust, Metamorphic Rock, James Hutton
Document Summary
Geo110 class 10 fundamentals of earth sciences. Early earth: 2. 4 billion years ago, disk of particles and grains that condensed and then pulled together by gravity until it became massive enough to create a planet. Illustrated by a sudden shake of a stretched rope. Seismograph: help determine and measure velocity of s and p waves, determined by density and ridgity of the material, waves travel faster in denser more rigid material, waves are reflected at boundaires where elastic properties differ. Lithosphere outer solid part of earth, including crust and uppermost mantel: 100km thick, boundary btw the lithosphere and asthenosphere is based on stress, two types, oceanic lithosphere, continental lithosphere. Lithosphere and asthenosphere: asthenosphere plastic (half hard half soft molten) layer below the lithosphere, lithospheric plate segment of lithosphere moving as a unit, in contact with adjacent lithosphere plates along plate boundaries. Continental: silica-rich, low density, 30-50km thick, stands higher than denser oceanic crust.
