Major quake hasnt happened since 400 years. Another earthquake 20 minutes later at 1. 5. After 6 hours of silence on jan 17 1995 at 5:46 huge earthquake happened. Water lines all broke, so water had to be pumped from ocean to put out fires. Quake was made becuase of rupture on city which linked 2 ruptures together. Houses in suburbs are just wood thats interlocked, but the roof is very heavy, and the unbraced force is the only support for roof, which causes roof to fall down when earthquake happens. Heavy roofs are used to withstand typhoons. Bridge that was meant to be earthquake proof, was destroyed. Steel fixings snap which held 2 parts of the bridge together, and 1 part of bridge moves. Pillars fail when short steel bars end which is the weakest point of the pillar. If steel bars inside concrete pillars werent made short then bridge could have survived.
