Today, the world-system is highly structured and is characterized by three iers: core regions, semi peripheral regions, and peripheral regions: immanuel wallerstein. The world-system is made up of a nested set of cores and peripheries. Canada is simultaneously part of the global core and semi-periphery. The evoluion of the modern world-system has exhibited disincive stages, each of which has let its legacy in diferent ways on paricular places, depending on their changing role within the world-system: tigris and euphrates iroquois- river system. The growth and internal colonizaion of the core regions could take place only with the foodstufs, raw materials, and markets provided by the colonizaion of the periphery. Within each of the world"s major regions, successive technological innovaions have transformed regional geographies.
