This family of viruses is transmitted by certain types of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. The virus has been transmitted to animals such as horses, cattle, mice, hamsters, dogs . No evidence of transmission from person to person. No evidence that infection will occur by handling live or dead infected birds. Outbreaks followed in egypt, israel, south africa, asia, europe, and russia. First outbreak in north america was in nyc in 1999. First case in canada occurred in summer 2001. 426 canadians infected by 2002 (found in 5 canadian provinces) 80% of those infected will have no symptoms. 0. 67% will have more serious form (meningitis or encephalitis) Signs: meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain or spinal cord, encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain itself. Most vulnerable: elderly, very young, and those with weakened immune systems. About 5% of people with serious complications will die.
