Every civilization is based on some kind of starch (rice or other grasses, corn, mace, potato) The ability to produce sufficient quantities of these starches resemble the diet in a particular region. The requirements of the people who have to live within a region/nation. Whether obtained from pasta, or bread, potatoes. Spend long hours working, in the winters too, colds.
