Because they rise out of the wet ground, they"re dry. Wind blows across them bc they"re elevated and blows mosquitoes away. Started as pond or wet frozen boggy area. As climate got colder and permafrost expanded, wet ground froze to form core of ice. Surrounded ground expanded and forced the wet ground up. If ice core melts, you end up with pond. They used to be rivers of melting water within glaciers. When glacier melted, the sand and gravel got deposited. Water takes away material and leaves fine material. Act like natural road for caribou for migration. Source of sand and gravel, material to build roads. Geologists followed eskers to figure out where diamonds were coming from. Warmth from soil that absorbs solar radiation and converts it to heat. They don"t seed every year - save energy. Not a lot of annual plants - grow its leaves, store sugar and c in one year.
