GEO 793 Lecture 2: GEO 793 CLASS 2
Document Summary
The importance of urban canada in the 21 st century. Sustainability: a sustainable city has characteristics that will allow it to survive in the long run. Concerns with sustainability: environmental impact in terms of high levels of population (air is unbreathable), too much garbage (need to figure out how to recycle more) Unevenness: unevenness that exists within the same city. Socio-economic status of the people living in that city. In 1970s a number of people identified as middle class. Gradually in many cities, the middle class (dominant) has become smaller and smaller. Richer seems to get richer, poorer seems to get poorer = polarized: between cities there are big cities like toronto that are doing much better economically then other smaller cities (such as guelph) or vice versa. Companies go up and down and its difficult to bet on the fortune of any particular city in the long run.
