Noticed that yonge street became focal point of toronto: it has strong symbolic value. Gay community organized a protest on yonge street: it was on purpose, they knew that on yonge street they would get attention (cid:3) (cid:3) People hid cause you could be put in jail before: evidence of sexual related contact hidden. If you couldn"t be gay then it was not common to see gay people in public: rules within gay male networks made by a singular elite. If you were young person who just entered community and discovered sexuality, your power was still limited. Rules and power was set by mature gay men who could afford having their own space. Democratic gay male space: identity visible. Being gay is no longer a crime: evidence of sexual contact obvious. People are allowed to come out so its more common to see gays in public space: rules and organizational structure set by multiple groups through open discussion.
