Travelled along what is now knows as the silk road . The writings of marco polo became the greatest travel log . Driven by and attracted to the opportunity of discovery. This notion of exploration continued until the 19th century. Became a necessary part of education for the mobile. Modern tourism is not much more than half a century old. Rapid rise in education, in developed nations (1950"s). Middle class were in the position to travel. Maybe not as long and as luxurious but it was possible. After wwii, relative stability of people being able to travel, taking into account their safety. Reason for travel includes general interest of another place"s culture. Travel is about the moment, memory, and experiences. People want to learn from their travel experience.
