Lecture 9 - peoples of north pt 3 + the northwest. People of the north are distinct by regions in the north. Culture is different dependent on the supplies you have and what you have access to. 3 inuit cultural regions: copper, netsilik, iglulik - all primarily coastal, all descendants of thule people. Each experience shift in what they eat and how they live throughout the year. Living in larger groups bc easier access to food. East: strong marine survival (walrus, whale, narwhal), sealing from kayaks, caribou hunting. Caribou is migratory in all populations = low pop in winter. Migrated north in fall bc of low predator rate. Holes healed + winter fur forming + healthier. Sealskin was usually worn in the summer (waterproof). Caribou skin was light weight yet very warm. Allow cold dry air to move in which body warms. Warm air rises along body and absorbs perspiration. Clothing consisted of coat, trousers, stockings, shoes or boots.
