City region is a term in use since about 1950 by urbanists, economists and urban planners to mean a metropolitan area and hinterland, often having a shared administration: downtown and area that surrounds the downtown core. Hinterland can refer to the rural area economically tied to an urban catchment area. Area from which a city, service or institution attracts a population that uses its services. Catchment area grows as more services are provided. A city region often consists of multiple administrative zones. Resources such as labour market and transport network such that it functions as a single unit. Ryerson and uoft have a catchment area- ryerson is gta and uoft is more dispersed. City region boundaries are typically determined through the study of transportation patterns, opposed to administrative boundaries. We can think of the gta as a city region.
