Montreal, people tend to travel into the city from the suburbs. Vancouver, not as strong of a tendency thean montreal, with more people living in the city. Toronto, cbd has a high ratio of jobs. 20-30 kms from downtown have high rates of in- commuters to the cbd. 45% of employment is within five km of the city centre. Both cities, overall growth is slower in the cbd: largely because few jobs existed previously. The three largest cities all have a ring from 5-10 km of the city centre that is residential and has few employment opportunities. When we examine all five of the cities we note that the patterns vary across cities. When we look at each city we find that the geography (mountains, water) have helped to shape the city. Jobs creation has tended to show growth in census tracts with high existing jobs: more than 5000 jobs. Montreal (43%), toronto (53%), ottawa (50%), vancouver (56%), calgary (70%)
