Calgary today: calgary"s resource based economy is driven by the fossil fuel industry, which has been booming until recently - downturn in oil. The population of calgary was growing faster than other cmas: calgary"s economic growth, however, is limited to boom & bust cycles effects of a resource driven economy. Historical developments: calgary"s economy and population grew in the 1970"s to the 80"s as a result of the following, 1973 - opec oil embargo, 1979 - iranian revolution, 1980 - onset of the iran-iraq war. Calgary"s economy: driven by the oil & gas industry, however, their economy does not fit the stereotype of the typical oil town. Employment is diverse, but is still tied to the oil & gas economy. The top employment categories are: construction, food services, architects and scientific research & services. Immigration has recently grown in importance due to labour shortages experienced during the boom cycle: calgary receives more migrants via interprovincial migration, than international migrants seeking.
