GEO 793 Lecture 2: WEEK 2 NOTES
Document Summary
The importance of urban canada in the 21st century. Based on the articles by filion and bunting, there"s 3 themes that all cities across the world face: sustainability, unevenness, uncertainty. What do they refer to? (when applied to cities) There"s a high chance of pollution in the cities compared to country sides; air pollution. In the summer, city of toronto sends messages out indicating: high smog levels because air isn"t clean and you"ll have respiratory problems. You also have a higher car population and number of people. More building construction = less green space available to purify the air (producing o2 and absorbing co2): outskirts of the city have lots of factories which releases high concentration of co2. In 2005, government protecting the green belt said we"re prevented from building out of the toronto area to have greenery. The legislation past so the increase of public transit was required to avoid private transit.
