NPT Non Proliferation Treaty - By 1970 all 5 countries had nuclear weapons and decided no
other country could have them. As they were worries about nuclear proliferation. Designed to
help countries share peaceful nuclear technology. Many countries that signed the deal did not
agree with it. First countries to openly disagree were Pakistan and India. Canada sold heavy
water nuclear reactors and was in a way responsible for providing the technology to make these
nuclear weapons. Israel does not admit having nuclear weapons but do not say they don’t. They
locked up people that worked on the project and do not let them leave, supposedly. Initially
Technology provided by the French.
The US attacked Iraq but was not able to find any nuclear weapons. Some assume the shelf life
was over for these weapons. Which if true was illegal for US to attack. (Theories) US likely
attacked Iraq to protect neighbors who are allies but also to protect their oil.
The US provides a nuclear umbrella for their allies and have to protect them. South Korea being
one of the ones is most eminent danger.
MAD- Mutually assured destruction. Under the circumstance that both countries would be
destroyed none should attack. However, you must keep updating your weapons to maintain
power. Similar situation during the cold war.
The IAEA International Energy Agency inspects any place where nuclear energy is used.
Although they must be announced and be accompanied with a government official. This allows
some countries to hide their operations. Which is what Iraq has likely done.
The Korean War (1950-1953)
Korea was known as the Hermit Kingdom “a country of mountains”. Very hostile towards
foreigners. Korea had Lots of minerals and a great location. Koreans hated the Japanese as they
tried to force their culture on the Koreans. They also have Korean women Comfort women-
prostitutes for the Japanese soldiers. After the Japanese were defeated there was a power
vacuum. Russia took over the North and US the south.
