GMS 695 Lecture 1: GMS695 - Week 1 - Islamic State of Iraq and Levant
Document Summary
Islamic state stands with al-qaeda as one of the most dangerous jihadist groups, after its gains in. Under its former name, islamic state in iraq and syria (isis), it was formed in april 2013, growing out of al-qaeda in iraq (aqi), which was chased out of iraq by american troops. It is one of the revolutionary groups who have been fighting against the syrian government. It has since been disavowed by al-qaeda, but has become one of the main rebel groups fighting government forces in syria and iraq. This islamic (sunni) fundamentalist group, which has fighters from across the world, has announced the establishment of a caliphate an islamic state across parts of northern iraq and syria and forced many minority communities from their homes. This challenges the current map of the region drawn up and enforced by the british french colonial governments after world war 1.
