GCM 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Flexography, Planographic Printing, Screen Printing
Document Summary
Used when very high quality impressions are required (e. g. art books, posters, and high quality cosmetic packaging cartons) Printing mechanism consists of a gravure cylinder and an impression cylinder of the same size. Plate is a flexible metal sheet wrapped around a carrier cylinder equipped with a gripper to hold plate in place during printing. Uses engraved metal cylinder as the image carrier (plate) Doctor blades shears the ink from the surface of the plate cylinder. Rubber coated impression roll brings the substrate in contact with the engraved cylinder. Gravure cylinders can be used many times before wearing out (reruns) Gravure cylinders are very costly and take a long time to make. Slower printing process (one print at a time) Conventional printing in the form of planographic, relief, and intaglio printing still dominates the print market. They remain the most efficient and economical way to produce large volumes of static print elements.
