Document Summary

This is unexpected because there wasn"t really a huge food supply in the medieval world: they grow enough food to keep themselves alive, not for population growth. This population growth called for more food: they did this because of more efficient plowing methods, peasants cultivated new land, but the biggest factor was climate change. This was called the great medieval warming period which started to make an impact after the year 1000 - 1300: warmer, drier summers and milder winters. Southern england: england had a wine industry and started to sell stuff to france. They are starting to have a win period again: this led to more babies being born. Population doubles in the warming period: they didn"t have anywhere to put these people so there was a revival of towns and cities. This wasn"t seen since the roman times, establishing cities. This revival was partly owed to 10th c jewish merchant connections in byzantium and islamic world.
