Civil rights activists organize a march on washington to support civil rights bill (august 28th, President lyndon johnson pushes the civil rights bill through congress (july 2, 1964) casting it as a memorial to the slain president. President johnson forges a bipartisan coalition of northern and border-state democrats and moderate republicans (to defeat southern dems and right-wing republicans) Outlaws discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, or national origin (est. the equal employment opportunity commission to enforce the law) Authorizes the justice department to institute suits to desegregate public schools and other facilities.
