More mobile than ever (jet aircraft common by the end of the 1960"s) The development of air conditioning allowed for the habitation of warmer climates. People are living longer and retiring and moving south. Male/female ratio was 3:1 in 1940, in 1960 it was 2:1. Rising middle class & a drop in poverty. It was possible to be working class and still live a middle class life. 95% of americans by the end of the 1960"s were native born; homogenous. Eating the same foods, doing the same things, watching the same shows. Religious difference were still important; kennedy was catholic. Efforts at a reform faced republicans & conservative democratic bloc. Led by fidel castro, overthrows battista (who america had supported) Drove cuba further into the arms of the soviets. Closest us & ussr ever came to war. Accidental president as a result of jfk"s death.
