Gained control of sumatra (place in indonesia) in the padri war (1821- 1838) Gained control of java (place in indonesia) in the java war (1825- 1830) After failed expeditions to conquer bali in 1846 and 1848, in 1849 military intervention brought northern bali under dutch control. The battle for aceh began with a dutch invasion in 1873 that was met with strong indigenous resistance and ended with an acehnese surrender in 1912. Dutch control remains fairly weak outside of java due to geographical constraint. Set up a system of forced cultivation, essentially turning the island into a dutch plantation. Abolished in 1870, and liberal period starts. Plantation production is privatized throughout the dutch east indies. Coolie labour brought in from india and china.
