This is an introduction to the study of art history from a cross-cultural perspective. The function of the pictorial arts (principally painting and sculpture) within religious, social and economic systems will be the primary focus of study. Students will be introduced to the diversity of artistic expression from across the globe and throughout history while they learn the fundamental principles and aims of pictorial expression and formal analysis. I wrote this description and i meant every word of it. Every week we will be learning more about what is meant by. Formal analysis and what it means to really look at art. From encyclopedia britannica: african art by way of a general introduction to our ideas about art. Since most of us have been brought up to think about art in ways that grew out of the european tradition of art, we will start by looking at a culture that sees things very differently.
