Many embellished objects, but not created as works for aesthetic contemplation. Art: something that stimulates imagination, has meaning beyond function. Lion man: artifact, german cave: unique because old but also person and animal = Prehistoric: origins of impulse to make art not descriptive, purely imagination. Art: special kind of artifact with profound meaning. Goes beyond use, beyond time: timeless, doesn"t lose status whereas artifacts could be objects that no longer have a use. Can see it was intentionally shaped no obvious function, is art. Ars longa, vita brevis: art lasts, life is short. Modes of representation: different ways to describe reality: art is representation of something in reality. Africa: some of oldest art, petroglyph giraffes. But still uses conventions: we can see butt and side, not how we"d see it irl, has stylization.
