Document Summary
In last week"s module, we began exploring the conflict resolution continuum. Taking a broad look at the models available, we learned that different conflict situations requires different goals and processes. And that managing, resolving or transforming a conflict leads to vastly different outcomes for all parties involved. Which process is most appropriate will depend on many factors. However, experience has taught us that the attitudes and behaviours that led to the crime will not necessarily change using a management approach. Like a distributive bargaining strategy, the divide between winners and losers is too stark. On the other hand, if it"s a change in attitude and relationships that you seek, then resolution and to a greater extent, transformative models are the way to go. Analysis is the logical and rational first step to determining how best to deal with conflict (as opposed to simply reacting, or worse, over-reacting).
