Involves connecting geographically remote computers into a single network capable of working in parallel on business problems that require short-term access to large computational capacity. Rather than purchase huge mainframes or super computers, firms can chain together thousands of smaller desktop clients into a single computing grid. Presents computing resources so that they can be accessed in ways that are not restricted by configuration. Allows multiple operating systems to run on one machine; increases server utilization rates from 10-15 to 70 percent of capacity.
