ITM 600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Carrier-Sense Multiple Access With Collision Detection, Scalability, Uptime
Document Summary
Scalability is how much growth a network can support, most companies it is a primary goal. The network design you propose should be able to adapt to increase in network usage and scope. 80/20 rule, 80% of traffic stays local in the department lans, and 20% of traffic is destined for other departments and external networks. Availability is the amount of time a network is available to users and is a critical goal for network design customers. Can be expressed as a uptime per year, month, week, day or hour compared to the total time in that period. 24 hr, 7 day a week service, if it is up. 165 hrs in a 168 hr week availability is 98. 21%. Sometimes linked to reliability but relaibiity refers to various issues such as accuracy etc. Also linked to redundancy but not a network goal.
