ITM 750 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Gantt Chart, Critical Path Method, Scope Creep
Document Summary
The critical path in a project is the series of linked activities in a project plan that determine how quickly the project can be done. A non-critical activity is not on the critical path. We can also decide to crash our project by adding resources to reduce the duration of any of our critical tasks. A good rule of thumb is to try to crash the earliest critical activity since it will allow all the successor activities could start a little earlier reducing the risk of delays. Critical chain project management (ccpm) is a more recent technique that suggests using buffers to avoid the tendency of critical activities to take longer than planned. A buffer is essentially a dummy activity placed on the gantt chart. Student syndrome the tendency for people to start tasks as late as possible in order to just meet their deadline, then something comes up and you miss the deadline.
