Hierarchy canada: constitution, legislation, jurisprudence judge made law/common law. Two types of government regulation: those that prevent you from committing a mistake, something you do before (e. g. obtaining a permit, those that punish you for a mistake. Idea that corporations need to be regulated: free market stands for no government intervention, corporation regulate themselves. Governments spend years negotiating regulations the severity of proposed regulations varies based on the party: some corporations have in house counsels (lawyers that work for just the firm to make sure all the laws are being followed) Criminal offence: for after the fact, sentence or punishment, very strict and severe punishment such as imprisonment, takes place in criminal court. Societal risk: will be addressed by the law (e. g. speeding regulations, no speed limits would result in more accidents and possibly deaths, poses a risk to society. Is my speedometer working: absolute liability offence.
