Document Summary

Rta101 - intro to media theory: week 5. The word derives from the ancient greek aisthetike meaning the science of how things are known via the senses . Aesthetics refers to a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature and expression of beauty. Since we know the world through our senses, everything becomes an aesthetic experience. Golden ratio, law of triangles, fractals, etc. were all based on perceptions of the natural world. The most ef cient shape for the eye to scan is a rectangle in which the horizontal is about one-and-a-half times the vertical. Examples of ef cient shapes include computer screens, theatrical and tv screens, most room layouts, landscapes. In the post-modern age, beauty has come under attack from many fronts. Feminists see beauty as a social construct, a myth manufactured by the patriarchy. Social/political activists see beauty as a tool that elites use to keep the masses distracted from the ugly aspects of consumerism and political suppression.
