Document Summary

Sergei eisenstein (1898-1948: very influential soviet filmmaker, developed a variety of creative editing techniques. Eisenstein"s method of montage : metric montage, rhythmic montage, tonal montage, overtonal montage. Music videos, edited to the beat, are an example: rhythmic montage: here the rhythm is formed out of movements within the shots. Unlike metric montage, rhythmic montage considers the content within images, and makes them. Rhyme. for example, the odessa steps sequence forms a rhythmic pattern between the images of the soldiers, the people, and the baby carriage, all descending the staircase. Some people identify rhythmic montage with continuity editing, because the rhythm forms continuity on the basis of the content of the shots. Action sequences and car chases establish rhythm in this sense, by matching up different shots in terms of a continuity of movement. But a montage in the more pure eisenstein-ian sense - has to fragment continuity, and disrupt the illusion of reality.
